Rehabilitation garden!
My back hurts, my arms hurt and I'm sunburned. With the warmer weather soil favorable for germination seed, the farmer in all of us are willing to take the spade in hand and test the waters hortacultural. I plant a garden this year and is hard work.
Planting and weeding a garden is not for the faint of heart, or it may be. Part of my rehabilitation from recent heart surgery, is the exercise I get from my piece of land. My doctor gave me permission to do this all the time who did not grow broccoli. He says there is enough of this factory in the world today.
My garden is in the house of a friend of mine a row of trees, almost all of the shade and sun. His property is large, but is not huge as it was before the Civil War as one of the largest plantations in Alabama, covering thousands of hectares.
Although I work land, look in the shells of two old chimneys broken once heated homes of sharecroppers and tenants in the old plantation. A few meters of stone markers, my corn is breaking the surface of the earth without knowing they are in the presence of history.
It are steps in the development of a garden and all these jobs require. Fortunately, the ground has been plowed a few weeks before I start my work, I had to break the ground. These are the steps used in the planting of my garden:
After the soil is plowed straight lines. It a sin in the south to have lines through them. My lines are straight as an arrow straight. I am attaching a bright red nylon cord between the two sections, I stuck in the ground on either side of the garden.
Dig a furrow with a hoe along the nylon. Sprinkle fertilizer in the furrow, then mix soil and fertilizer, with the hoe. 13-13-13 mix I can use my garden. The trick is to pour the correct amount in the throat, too little and the plants do not spring from the earth and grow too much and burn plants when it escapes from the earth ..
Sewing the seeds in the furrow, about 4 inches. Non-compliance this rule very well. I spread a lot of seeds in the row to fit and thin if all germinate, one in four are not.
The instructions on seed packets indicate the precise distance and separation in depth of planting seeds. I have great difficulty with this step process. It is difficult to propagate only ½ inch of soil over the seeds. A package indicates that a plant corn and a quarter inch deep. Do not worry not for that. Not that those who come after me with a tape measure.
A large amount of my time is spent resting. In the breaks between those who grow seed corn, purple hull peas, and pumpkin and watermelon. I have some tomato plants and pepper fall into the holes I dug as I followed the thread.
Mulching in tomato plants results in larger plants and more fruit because the mulch keeps water ground to dry out more quickly than usual. chopped leaves in pepper plants do not work for me because they wither and die. I do not know why that happens but it does.
The joys of gardening has just begun for me. When the peas, corn and tomatoes have really started to grow, the insects were discovered. There are many insecticides tested in the market.
You can choose one of these for kill insects and plants can flourish in daisies and marigolds. They never worked well for me, but she adds a touch of class to the garden.
Hopefully something to buy or plant kill insects in my pumpkin, which appear to be in grave danger of all holes in the leaves. For the moment I won the battle insects, weeds have run over my little corner of horticultural paradise.
Gardening is very demanding, but the work I put in my garden have not been in vain if I can get through the growing season without another heart attack.

corn worms in the garden of Alabama.?
I am the hybrid corn and went to get him and was full of worms! I checked whole corn (which is like 20 floors) and each piece has at least 6 of worms! Is it that I can put in corn or soil or something keep the worms away? I planted a bit like tomatoes, raddishs, watermelon, nuts and crookneck sqaush and everything else is 100% perfect. we have many crabgrass could do something with him? I would also like to eat corn, so it should be safe. about 1 hour. west of Selma, Alabama (crumptonia)
You worm corn-cob ……… ick! The mineral oil in each ear, inside the hull can help. Now they found the corn is probably not interested in the natural Bt …. Bacillus thuringiensis. Hand picking and sprinkle Sevin can be anything you can do right now. (See below) Home & Garden In the garden of his house there are a few varieties that are resistant to damage Corn cob, ie, Country Gentleman, Stay Gold, Victoria Golden Rooster, Silver Cross, and Silvergent. Check the label to various limitations and precautions. Carbaryl (Sevin) is recommended for use in the garden of his house. Apply carbaryl 50% wettable powder 4 tablespoons soup or carbaryl 80% wettable powder 2 1 / 2 c. tablespoons per gallon of water. Wet the bristles all ears until harvest is complete. Powders containing Sevin can also be used. Can be applied to the silks of each ear with a hand brush or a feather duster. I do like the manner in which you have presented this particular issue and it does provide me a lot of fodder for thought. Nevertheless, coming from what I have experienced, I basically hope as the reviews stack on that folks continue to be on point and don’t embark on a tirade involving the news of the day. Still, thank you for this exceptional piece and while I can not agree with it in totality, I regard your point of view.
